Happy news: my project has been awarded the Denkraum Ukraine Sur-Place Fellowship by the Centre for Interdisciplinary Ukrainian Studies “Think Space Ukraine” (Denkraum Ukraine)!
Denkraum Ukraine is one of the major Ukraine-related research initiatives in Germany, established at the University of Regensburg in 2024. Their motto is “Uniting through knowledge about Ukraine” - and this is what I totally believe in. We Ukrainians have been given the truly tough yet also noble fate of living where history is making itself right now. We are not unique - we are just the first.
And I truly believe that, developed through Ukrainian experience, the theoretical framework of the Stayer alongside the methodological perspective of social phenomenology of radical instability - my two key contributions - can offer something essential about modern life.
The fellowship is intended for Ukrainian researchers who cannot leave Ukraine due to legal restrictions, family obligations, and similar reasons. I can leave - technically. Yet I truly believe that it is hardly possible to study war from a comfortable distance. In other words, to study the Stayers, one must be the Stayer. Leaving would transform me into a Stranger – and my research would become impossible.
With the fellowship support, I will work on the methodological part of my doctoral project. The goal is to finalize an article based on my pilot study. It will show my approach to analyzing wartime diaries as sociological data, and discuss the challenges of qualitative coding of such complex, multilingual, temporally, spatially, and contextually situated data.
I plan to submit the article to Qualitative Research by the end of the summer. I will also propose a more detailed report for the MAXQDA blog and for a broader audience platform - probably, The Sociological Review. I will also have an opportunity to share the results via the Denkraum Ukraine blog.
