At the end of May, I had the pleasure of presenting my doctoral research project at the Department of Theoretical Sociology, Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of Sciences.
The presentation was built around my pivotal conceptual figure of the Stayer and the two theoretical inversions that structure the project — one in the sociological lineage of what I call “boundary figures” and one in phenomenological sociology. Importantly, I first articulated my genealogy of “boundary figures” and positioned the Stayer as a figure this genealogy lacked until now.
I also presented my concept of narrative reconstruction of reality and the first sensitizing concepts for the empirical study of this process. These are Forced epoché and Ambivalence, which I consider the key characteristics of the Stayer condition.
I have repeatedly presented these elements separately at multiple events over the past year, but this was the first time I put them together and, moreover, linked the theoretical framework to the empirical study I am conducting. It was also the first public introduction of my methodological perspective — a corpus approach to publicly shared diaries (published in paper and kept online), as well as the first introduction of the corpus itself.
It was a genuinely productive event — one of the moments when the intersubjective nature of academic work becomes visible in practice.
