I am happy to become a grantee of the Documenting Ukraine grant by IWM - Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen.
The project I proposed is a part – or rather a specific case – of my doctoral dissertation and the Stayer project. In this broader project, I take war as a “classical” case of Staying. In contrast, the IWM project addresses a threshold case: staying under occupation without accepting it. What does this the staying mean for those who lose not only the familiar homeland but also the connection to the surrounding community? Is this a form of resilience or moral vacuum and passivity?
The life under occupation remains, however, the most understudied – and often deliberately silenced – aspect of war. I aim to lift the veil of distrust, rejection, contempt, and dehumanization, which unifies those who stay in the occupied regions and distinguish unique experiences of such staying.
